Tate and Lyle keeps sugar but refocuses to ingredients Print E-mail
Thursday, 27 May 2010
27th May Tate & Lyle boss Javed Ahmed has not put his sugar business up for sale, but he has vowed to shake up the business by refocusing on speciality food ingredients.

Despite analyst predictions, the group will keep its traditional sugar business, but it will become a lower priority. Tate & Lyle already produce a wide range of ingredients including starch-based products, stabilisers and ethanol components.

"Our core value added food ingredients delivered a strong result, reflecting steady demand and firmer pricing," Ahmed commented. "We are refocusing on our strategy, with our speciality food ingredients business being the key focus of investment and long-term growth, as well as making a number of important changes to the group's organisation."

Tate & Lyle announced that underlying profits before tax dropped to £229 million - a 7% fall in the year to 31st March, compared to £247 million the previous year. Splenda Sucralose saw sales climb 11% to 187m in 2009, the global market for high-intensity sweeteners flattened.
