Functional carbohydrate can help win the race Print E-mail

At the recent Health Ingredients Europe 2008 event in Paris, BENEO-Palatinit, a manufacturer of functional carbohydrates derived from pure sugar beet, announced the results of a new study testing the effects of Palatinose, a low glycaemic functional carbohydrate.
The study, conducted at Freiburg University Clinic in Germany in 2008, compared the results of two groups of experienced cyclists cycling 90 minutes at submaximal steady state, followed by a time trial. One group was given a sports drink containing Palatinose and the other was given a liquid meal containing the high glycaemic maltodextrin. During the time trial the athletes that were given Palatinose performed better, showing a very clear tendency to finish one minute (3%) faster than the maltodextrin group. Furthermore, the Palatinose group had more sustained energy, with an especial power increase in the last five minutes of the test, and a significant higher fat oxidation and better maintenance of blood glucose levels until the end of the exercise.

Dr Stephan Hausmanns, head of product development at BENEO-Palatinit, said: “We are pleased with these results. They further re-enforce that Palatinose is the ideal ingredient for sport and energy drinks as well as for sports nutrition. This was the third study of this kind that we have carried in order to thoroughly explore the benefits of Palatinose and the valuable contribution it can make to the sports drinks market.

“Palatinose is a fully digestible, low GI carbohydrate which provides prolonged energy in form of glucose. Because it takes longer to digest, the energy is released more slowly rather than all at once, resulting in longer lasting energy with no sudden drop in blood sugar that can result in fatigue and loss of concentration. Palatinose also encourages the burning of fat reserves as energy during exercise. This makes it ideal for athletes looking for optimum endurance performance. In addition, Palatinose is also toothfriendly.”
